Completion of Large Connectivity Project in the Dominican Republic

BEC Telecom S.A. completes Deployment of its First Connectivity Project Integrating Airspan’s Wireless and AS.Tone products; Trials WiMAX

Airspan Networks a leading worldwide provider of broadband wireless access networks, including WiMAX standard systems, and carrier class VoIP systems, and BEC Telecom S.A. (BEC-TEL), a competitive local carrier in the Dominican Republic, announced today the completion of deployment of a large scale rural connectivity network under the Dominican Republic’s Rural Public Telephony Phase II Project and the initiation of commercial operations.
The Project was inaugurated in a ceremony at the National Palace attended by the Vice-President of the Dominican Republic, the Secretary of State for Telecommunications, and other public figures. The Project, which was developed under the auspices of INDOTEL, was installed and is being operated by BEC-TEL, and has benefited over 1,750 communities in eighteen provinces in the country.

Users of the new network can make and receive local, national and international calls using a network based on fixed and mobile wireless technologies that also give Internet access and VoIP service. Townships in the provinces of La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, María Trinidad Sánchez, Monseñor Nouel, Monte Cristi, Peravia, Valverde, La Vega, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, Santiago and Santo Domingo have already benefited from the Project.

“BEC-TEL has taken on the duty of operating and maintaining the installed network for a period of 10 years, and will provide telecommunications services in areas never before served by other carriers in the Dominican Republic based on the most advanced technologies at a reasonable prices.”

- Mr. Giora (Gigi) Oron, Chief Executive Officer of BEC-TEL

Under the Project, BEC-TEL has undertaken to bring to the Dominican Republic technologies that are essential for the operation of carrier-class broadband networks in today’s world, and at the same time advance the government’s vision to be a modern nation with a widening horizon of telecommunications. To reach this goal, BEC-TEL is installing a complete wireless communications network. Mr. Oron explained that the system will function 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and users will call using pre-paid cards, which helps reduce possible vandalism of the equipment.

To provide the services, BEC-TEL has integrated two complementary wireless technologies: cellular, and the digital point-to-multipoint radios purchased from Airspan. The Airspan equipment operates in the 3.5GHz and 5.8GHz bands. BEC-TEL owns a licensed band in the 3.5GHz band that it is using for last-mile access with Airspan’s WipLL products. Airspan also supplied a significant portion of BEC-TEL backbone infrastructure using its AS3030 product in the 5.8GHz band. All the Airspan’s wireless equipment connects seamlessly with its AS.Tone softswitch and gateways to enable VoIP services.

BEC-TEL also recently announced the commencement of field trials using Airspan’s newest MacroMAX 3.5Ghz product, the industry’s first 802.16-2004 product designed to be certified by the WiMAX Forum. BEC-TEL thus becomes the first operator in the Dominican Republic to introduce WiMAX technologies. BEC-TEL will use Airspan’s WiMAX products to enhance its broadband offerings to corporate and residential customers in the country.

“We are very pleased that our support of BEC-TEL during the last year culminated in a successful integrated deployment of our broad range of broadband access, WiMAX, wireless backbone and VoIP products into a combined seamless platform that enables the provision of data and voice services. We have developed an unparalleled product portfolio and skill-set for rural wireless deployments, which brings significant value to rural operators. As a result we have become the vendor of choice for projects of this nature.”

- Mr. Amit Ancikovsky
Vice President & General Manager
Latin America for Airspan

Airspan’s AS.MAX product family has been designed for indoor, self-installable deployment of customer premises equipment, an essential requirement of operators for the economic rollout of broadband wireless.

The EasyST is the first product of its type to fully enable indoor plug-and-play WiMAX services. The product family became commercially available in the third quarter of 2005. The products give businesses and consumers uninterrupted access to a rich variety of high bandwidth applications such as networked gaming, streamed digital music, TV, videoconferencing, and other real-time services at speeds faster than today’s 3G networks. Fixed WiMAX is expected to deliver end-user data rates greater than 1 Mbps – 3 to 5 times faster than today’s commercial 3G networks.

Airspan's WipLL platform is a low-cost high-performance Fixed Wireless Access system designed to deliver high-speed data, Voice over IP (VoIP) and multimedia services to residential, small business and enterprise customers. WipLL introduces real-time adaptive modulation (2-, 4-, 8-level FSK) and auto retransmission request (ARQ); features that offer high quality services whilst maximizing spectrum utilization. WipLL is available in both licensed bands (700 MHz, 1.5GHz, 2.5GHz, 2.7-2.9GHz and 3.4-3.8GHz) and unlicensed bands (900MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz).

About Airspan

Furthermore, Airspan is developing one of the most comprehensive family of IEEE802.16-2004 WiMAX products, called AS.MAX, which comprises of a range of base stations, backhaul solutions and CPEs, including the industry’s first self-installable, all-indoor CPE known as EasyST. AS.MAX also recognizes the importance of protecting service providers’ investments by incorporating software upgradability to IEEE802.16e (draft) from the beginning. AS.MAX products fully leverage Airspan’s years of real-world experience in deploying Wireless solutions; giving service providers an exceptional combination of price and performance, thus offering truly outstanding economics.
